Consumption risk, technology adoption and poverty traps: evidence from Ethiopia
نویسندگان
چکیده
Much has been written on the determinants of input and technology adoption in agriculture, with issues such as input availability, knowledge and education, risk preferences, profitability, and credit constraints receiving much attention. This paper focuses on a factor that has been less well documented: the differential ability of households to take on risky production technologies for fear of the welfare consequences if shocks result in poor harvests. Building on an explicit model, this is explored in panel data for Ethiopia. Historical rainfall distributions are used to identify the counterfactual consumption risk. Controlling for unobserved household and time-varying village characteristics, it emerges that not just exante credit constraints, but also the possibly low consumption outcomes when harvests fail, discourage the application of fertiliser. The lack of insurance causes inefficiency in production choices. JEL classification: O12, O33, Q12, Q16

Social Capital and Weather Shocks in Ethiopia: Climate Change and Culturally-Induced Poverty Traps
One implication of climate change is that farmers in the horn of Africa will be more frequently exposed to droughts and floods. While adoption of certain farm management strategies reduces exposure to such shocks, the uptake of risk mitigating measures is far from complete. We explore how social capital in the form of kinship networks, characterized by the moral imperative of within-group shari...
متن کاملTransformation in Smallholder Agriculture through Intensification in Ethiopia: Determinants and Implications
It is a challenge for a farmer with limited resources to decide on the production of commodities and investment in the farm. Transformation of smallholder subsistence agriculture, to market oriented value addition based agriculture is vital for poverty reduction in Ethiopia. This study was initiated to explore the factors which contribute for the adoption of improved wheat and pepper varieties ...
متن کاملWelfare impacts of improved chickpea adoption: A pathway for rural development in Ethiopia?
We analyse the impact of improved chickpea adoption on welfare in Ethiopia using three rounds of panel data. First, we estimate the determinants of improved chickpea adoption using a double hurdle model. We apply a control function approach with correlated random effects to control for possible endogeneity resulting from access to improved seed and technology transfer activities. To instrument ...
متن کاملHeterogeneous wealth dynamics: On the roles of risk and ability
Herd dynamics of Boran Pastoralists Contemporary policy debates are rife with discussions of “poverty traps” which describe structural features of the state of poverty that cause it to persist. Different factors may give rise to different types of poverty traps: there may be groups within a population for whom there exists a unique equilibrium associated with persistent poverty and others who f...
متن کاملInformal insurance in the presence of poverty traps: Evidence from southern Ethiopia
Recent empirical work finds evidence of highly nonlinear wealth dynamics among Boran pastoralists of southern Ethiopia, consistent with the hypothesis of poverty traps. This paper explores the consequences of such dynamics for informal inter-household transfers. Using original primary data on social networks and transfers, we find that asset transfers respond to recipients’ losses, but only so ...
